The Sickness, Book One, is a dystopian science-fiction novella, set in a near-future world recently devastated by a mysterious pandemic and beholden to an authoritarian regime that acts to suppress evidence of the pandemic. Centering on the neurotic disintegration if its main character, the Actor, as he repeatedly encounters the ghost of his deceased brother, the novel-as-artwork explores memory, concepts around illness, haunting, information control, the psychology of guilt, and the artifice and materiality of theater and television productions. The book would be of special interest to fans of the work of Philip K. Dick, lovers of contemporary ghost stories, or anybody seeking a creative reflection on the unprecedented year we have just experienced.
